  2. Jules Brière, author of an article in Synergie magazine

    Mr. Jules Brière, Ad. E., a Lavery partner, is the author of an article entitled “Modification du cadre législatif de la recherche” (Improvements to the legislative framework with regards to research) that was published in the August-September 2013 edition of Synergie, a publication of the Association québécoise d’établissements de santé et de services sociaux (AQESSS).Mr. Brière’s article is focused on An Act to amend the Civil Code and other legislative provisions with respect to research, which was assented to on June 14, 2013 and modified certain provisions with respect to research that are included in the Civil Code, and on An Act respecting health services and social services, particularly the complaint examination procedure set forth in article 34 of the Act.To consult this article (in French) click here.

  3. Gérard Coulombe, new Chairman of the Board of the Canadian International Organ Competition

    Having been recently appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian International Organ Competition (CIOC), Mr. Gérard Coulombe, Q.C., Ad. E., a Business Law partner at Lavery, participated in a press conference, which was held on September 24 to announce the programming of the Second Annual Festival des grands orgues CIOC that will take place from October 25-27, 2013 in Montreal, under the Honorary Presidency of the Honourable Lucien Bouchard.The press conference was held in the presence of Mr. Gérard Coulombe, the Chairman Emeritus and CIOC Co-Founder, Mr. E. Noël Spinelli, C.M., C.Q., the Artistic Director and Co –Founder of the Competition, Professor John Grew, former Dean and Professor Emeritus of the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and the CIOC Executive Director, Mr. Thomas Leslie.Mr. Coulombe’s volunteer work for the CIOC demonstrates the extent of Lavery’s involvement in the arts community. It also helps raise the profile of Montreal and enables the music-loving public to discover the best young organists in the world.

  4. Marie Cossette comments the beginning of the Ménard Commission public hearings

    On September 23, 2013, Ms. Marie Cossette, a Litigation partner at Lavery, appeared on RDI network and Radio-Canada radio to comment the beginning of the public hearings of the Special Commission of Inquiry on the Spring 2012 Events (Ménard Commission), under the chairmanship of former minister, Serge Ménard. She participated to the TV programs Sous la loupe and RDI en direct broadcasted on RDI as well as to the Radio-Canada radio shows Pas de midi sans info and Le 15-18. Ms. Cossette appeared on these TV and radio broadcasts because of her comprehensive knowledge of commissions of inquiry and crisis management expertise.

  6. Louis Payette and Jean Saint-Onge before the Commissions des institutions of the Québec National Assembly

    Mr. Louis Payette, Ad. E. and Mr. Jean Saint-Onge, Ad. E., Business Law and Litigation partners at Lavery respectively, appeared on September 13, 2013 before the Commission des institutions with regard to the submission of a brief by the Barreau du Québec concerning Bill 28 that intends to reform the Code of Civil Procedure. Led by the President of the Quebec Bar, Ms. Johanne Brodeur, Ad. E., the team also included Mr. Robert-Jean Chénier, Ad. E., Mr. Jocelyn Verdon and Mr. Dominique Trahan.Mr. Payette’s presentation was focused on judicial sales and the enforcement of mortgage debts whereas Mr. Saint-Onge discussed class actions, particularly the delicate issue of multijurisdictional class actions as well as the asymmetrical appeal rule at the authorization stage.The Minister of Justice of Québec, Mr. Bertrand St-Arnaud, thanked the Barreau du Québec for its informative presentation and expressed his willingness to have the new Code of Civil Procedure adopted by the National Assembly before February 2014.

  9. Gérard Coulombe, recipient of the Lawyer Emeritus distinction

    Lavery is pleased to announce that Mr. Gérard Coulombe, Q.C., Ad. E., a Business Law partner at Lavery, has received the Lawyer Emeritus (Ad. E.) distinction from the Barreau du Québec during a ceremony that was held on September 23, 2013 at the Montréal Science Centre.This prestigious honorary distinction is awarded to members of the Barreau for their exceptional legal career. In the last 35 years, Mr. Coulombe has carried on a general practice in business and commercial law where he represents more specifically financial institutions, Crown corporations and multinational companies. He sits on the boards of directors of several corporations, including National Bank of Canada, Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust and Club de hockey Canadien, Inc. As shown in the photo, the Montreal Canadiens recognized this accomplishment in their own way.

  11. Emil Vidrascu, speaker at a seminar on the New Romanian Civil Code

    Emil Vidrascu, speaker at a seminar on the New Romanian Civil Code Mr. Emil Vidrascu, a Litigation partner at Lavery, has been invited to take part in a seminar that will take place in Bucharest, Romania, October 23-26, 2013. The seminar will focus on the New Romanian Civil Code that was adopted at the end of 2011 and was partly inspired by the Civil Code of Québec.Organized jointly by the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest, the Institut Juriscope de l’Université de Poitiers and l’Association Henri Capitant des amis de la culture juridique française, the seminar will be held under the theme “The New Romanian Civil Code: An Internal and External Perspective” and will draw several renowned speakers.During the seminar, Mr. Vidrascu will give a conference entitled “Développements jurisprudentiels sur des aspects du droit des obligations du Québec dont se sont inspirés les codificateurs roumains”. It is worth mentioning that a select group of Quebec lawyers acted as consultants from 1999 to 2003 to advise the Commission for the Reform of the Romanian Civil Code. This group of lawyers included Emil Vidrascu, Gil Rémillard, Jean Pineau, Jean-Louis Baudouin and Jacques Auger.

  12. André Laurin conducts a training workshop on deliberative assemblies

    Mr. André Laurin, a Business Law partner at Lavery, conducted a training workshop on deliberative assemblies during the 5th Seminar of the Officers of Professional Corporations that took place in Quebec City from September 11-13, 2013.This seminar was attended by several hundred directors and executives from the 44 registered professional corporations in Quebec and by other professionals. During the workshop, Mr. Laurin discussed various issues with respect to meetings, including the management of these meetings and the measures that must be implemented by the facilitator, participants and management to maximize effectively and respectfully their respective contribution.
