  2. Marie Cossette of Lavery speaks at the Canadian Institute’s anticorruption conference

    Marie Cossette was a session speaker at The Canadian Institute’s conference La lutte contre la corruption au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et à l’étranger (Anticorruption in Quebec, Canada, the US and Abroad) held in Montreal on October 29th, 2014. During her presentation, Ms. Cossette discussed ways to identify red flags and tag risks depending on the business field, of the location where it carries out its activities and of the scope of its interaction with local government authorities.  She also spoke about internal due diligence programs, the necessity to adapt when the risk potential changes and how best to evaluate situations where excessive compensation is demanded by third parties.   3. Jean-Philippe Turgeon of Lavery – Speaker at the 4th Edition of the Conseil québécois de la franchise’s Symposium

    Jean-Philippe Turgeon, a Partner at Lavery and leader of our Franchising and Distribution Section, spoke at the 4th Edition of the Conseil québécois de la franchise’s Symposium, on November 13, 2014. The symposium’s theme was “Best Practices and Recent Jurisprudence in Franchising” (« Meilleures pratiques et jurisprudence récente en franchise ») and was a great success. Mr. Turgeon’s conference was entitled “Ethics and Best Practices for Franchisor: Essential to Maintain Growth in the Franchising Industry” (« L’éthique et les bonnes pratiques du franchiseur : impératif pour maintenir la croissance de l’industrie de la franchise »).   4. Jean Martel of Lavery associated to the IIAC Hall of Fame induction ceremony

    On October 30, 2014, Jean Martel, Ad.E., a Financial Law partner at Lavery and member of the IIAC Selection Committee, participated to the 2014 IIAC Investment Industry Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Established in 2013, the IIAC Investment Industry Hall of Fame acknowledges the achievements of distinguished professionals in the Canadian securities industry.   5. Louis Charette and Emil Vidrascu of Lavery speakers at Les journéés de l’ABQ on November 6

    On November 6th, Messrs. Louis Charette and Emil Vidrascu, partners in Lavery’s Commercial Litigation group, gave conferences at the Journées de l’ABQ (Association Béton Québec). This conference doubled as technical training on granulates and on the responsibilities of concrete producers. Mr. Charette spoke about the ‘Responsibilities and Obligations of Concrete Producers’ (Responsabilités et obligations des producteurs de béton), while Mr. Vidrascu gave a conference on ‘Everything You Need To Know about the Competition Act’ (Tout sur la loi sur la concurrence). In the wake of the Charbonneau Commission and its allusions to collusion, this training day provided practical insights and best practices tools for the participating producers.   6. Daniel Bouchard of Lavery speaks on the legal implications of distinguishing between ‘ditch’ and ‘stream’

    On November 7th in Montreal, Daniel Bouchard, Managing Partner of the Quebec City office of Lavery and partner specialized in municipal, environmental and administrative law, gave a conference at the invitation of the Chambre des notaires on the legal implications of the distinctions between ‘ditch’ and ‘stream’, particular in view of environmental law.

  7. Loïc Berdnikoff, Magali Cournoyer-Proulx and Guy Lavoie of Lavery give a training session to members of the CSAQ (ambulances)

    Loïc Berdnikoff, Magali Cournoyer-Proulx and Guy Lavoie of Lavery gave a two-day training session to representatives of Corporation des services d’ambulance du Québec (CSAQ) member companies last November 19th and 20th in Quebec City.  The various sessions of the training program covered Privacy rules and issues applicable in the ambulance field, a review of decisions rendered during the last year specifically regarding labour relations within the pre-hospital environment and the impact and future of social media on the field.  Loïc Berdnikoff, Magali Cournoyer-Proulx and Guy Lavoie

    Guy Lavoie, Brittany Carson and Élodie Brunet have authored a chapter in "New Perspectives on Canadian Employment Law", published by LexisNexis in October 2014. Their contribution reviews decisions of interest rendered in Quebec over the last year in the field of employment law. The chapter in question, Chapter 16, is entitled “Employment Law and Practice: Current Issues".   9. Lavery Sherbrooke Office and the 11th Annual Conference on Insurance

    On October 22nd, Lavery Sherbrooke Office held the 11th Annual Conference on Insurance entitled: « Récents développements en assurance de dommages ». The conference was organized in cooperation with Déry, Barrette, expert consultants in claim settlements.  Sylvain Provencher and Cheryl Gilbert, both specialised in Insurance Law and litigation at the Lavery Sherbrooke Office, delivered presentations entitled: « Résumé des décisions importantes dans la dernière année en assurance de dommages » and « Comment traiter une réclamation avec un assuré difficile ? Les limites de l’obligation de collaboration de l’assuré ». Two other conferences were also presented: « Le rôle d’un expert en sinistres en situation de catastrophe-Lac-Mégantic » and « Comment maximiser vos chances d’établir un bon contact avec l’assuré – analyse des types de personnalité et comportement à éviter ». This event was a true success, much appreciated by the 130 participants.

  10. Guy Lavoie of Lavery - Speaker at the ACUQ Conference

    On October 30, 2014, Mr. Guy Lavoie, a partner in Lavery’s Labour and Employment team, spoke at this year’s Association des centres d’urgence du Québec (ACUQ) Conference in Quebec City. His presentation was entitled Joies, périls et futur de l’internet et des réseaux sociaux dans le milieu de travail (The Joys, Perils and Future of Internet and Social Media in the Workplace). Since the advent of the Internet in the workplace at the beginning of the 90’s, employers have faced ever-changing challenges. With the arrival of social media and the popularity of smartphones, things got even more complicated. Where does this leave us in 2014? What are the challenges, the rights and the obligations of employers and employees in a digital workplace? What are the best practices under the circumstances? How can freedom of speech for employees coexist with an employer’s right to preserve its reputation? What are the effects of social media on labour relations? Those are some of the issues Mr. Lavoie addressed during his presentation.

    A hundred enthusiastic young entrepreneurs and representatives of start-up support organizations for Lavery’s Go inc. Program launch on November 12th. Don McCarty, Managing Partner at Lavery, and Mr. Étienne Brassard, Go inc. Program Coordinator and associate in the Private Financing group at Lavery outlined the program’s advantages while two entrepreneurs also spoke about the value and importance of obtaining appropriate guidance throughout the start-up process.   12. Julie Cousineau, Jean-Philippe Lincourt and Laurence Bich-Carrière of Lavery, speakers at a conference on the reform of Civil Procedure

    On November 5th, 2014, Julie Cousineau, Jean-Philippe Lincourt and Laurence Bich-Carrière of Lavery discussed the reform of the Quebec Code of Civil Procedure.
