  1. Three Lavery lawyers give a conference on oppression remedies before the Judges of the Superior Court of Quebec, Commercial Division

    On December 15, 2015, at the Montréal Courthouse, Jean-Yves Simard, Bruno Verdon and Léa Maalouf, all three members of the litigation group, gave a conference entitled “Applications for interim and safeguard orders in oppression matters” (« Les demandes de mesures provisoires et d’ordonnances de sauvegarde dans le cadre d’un recours en oppression ») before more than twenty judges from the Superior Court of Quebec, Commercial Division. The Lavery lawyers recapped the legislative basis, the applicable criteria and jurisprudence, and then spoke on the practical and procedural aspects of oppression remedies.   2. Véronique Morin of Lavery presents a work relations management webinar to Ordre des CRHA members

    On December 8, 2015, Véronique Morin, a lawyer whose practice focuses on labour and health law, presented a webinar to Ordre desconseillers en ressources humaines agréés (CRHA) members. The webinar asked, “What is the true usefulness of last-chance agreements, and how can their effectiveness be increased?” (« Quelle est la véritable utilité des ententes de dernière chance et comment accroître leur efficacité? »), and answered by identifying the applicable accommodation measures, by offering suggestions as to how such clauses should be drafted and by summarizing the lessons that can be derived from recent jurisprudence, as well as providing a summary of the incumbent obligations.   3. Record-breaking Centraide campaign for Lavery in 2015!

    Lavery is very proud to announce that its annual Centraide campaign for 2015 has proven to be its most successful campaign to date! Indeed, since the beginning of November, more than $ 130,000  has been raised! Lavery would like to thank all the volunteers and donors for participating in the campaign in such large numbers and for their generosity. The firm is delighted that the funds raised will contribute significantly to the development and success of numerous regional charitable organizations.   4. André Laurin speaks on the duties and liability risks of directors

    On November 26, 2015, André Laurin, a Lavery partner specialized in business law, gave a seminar entitled "Devoirs et risques de responsabilité des administrateurs" (Directors' duties and liability risks), to directors and certain executives of Aéroports de Montréal. This training covered directors' general duties, obligations and statutory responsabilities as set out in laws and regulations applicable and interpreted in case laws.

  5. Laurence Bich-Carrière of Lavery wins the oratory competition of the “Conférence internationale des Barreaux”

    Lavery is pleased to announce that Laurence Bich-Carrière, one of its promising young lawyers, has won the international oratory competition of the “Conférence internationale des barreaux de tradition juridique commune (CIB)”, on December 3, 2015. Winner of the Young Bar of Montreal Oratory Competition in June 2015, Ms. Bich-Carrière was invited to represent the Bar of Montreal at the CIB which was held in Cotonou, Benin, from December 2 to December 5, 2015. On this occasion, she participated in an oratory competition against lawyers from all over the French-speaking world, where she took 1st place!  Member of the Quebec Bar since 2009, Me Bich-Carrière is part of the Litigation group and focuses her practice on all aspects of civil and commercial litigation. Her academic record is replete with frequent appearances on the Dean’s List as well as the receipt of graduate-level scholarships, in particular the MacDonald Travelling Scholarship. “We are delighted to recognize Laurence’s outstanding success at this event. Her knowledge of the law, her wit, and quick repartee are remarkable. We are pleased to count her as one of our own”, said Don McCarty, Lavery’s Managing Partner.

  6. Lavery finances the planting of 100 trees in the Montréal area

    Through its Environmental Committee, Lavery, a proud partner of the 375 000 trees planting program, is pleased to have contributed to the plantation of 100 trees in the parc Les Berges Aristide-Laurier, located in Terrebonne. The 375 000 trees project intends on rising the canopy index to 3 % in the greater Montreal area by having 375 000 new trees planted by 2017.   7. Pierre Marc Johnson, Chair of the board of Centre Jacques Cartier of Lyon

    Pierre Marc Johnson, former Premier of Quebec and counsel at Lavery recognized for his expertise in international trade and cross-border partnerships, participated in the 28es Entretiens Jacques Cartier as Chair of the board of Centre Jacques Cartier. During this event which was held in Lyon from Monday, November 16 to Thursday, December 3, 2015, Mr. Johnson presented a lecture on the negotiation of the Canada-European Union Agreement before an audience of scholars and business people interested in the implementation of this type of agreement for businesses. He also hosted a joint interview between Montreal’s and Lyon’s mayors at the city hall of Lyon, particularly on environmental issues and city development.

  8. Awatif Lakhdar presents the 2015 case law review in family law

  10. Lavery proud to pursue its tradition of contribution to the development of entrepreneurship by supporting Fondation Montréal inc.

    Lavery, through its Lavery GO inc. Program and Lavery Capital group makes an aggregate $25,000 donation ($5,000 annually over five years) to Fondation Montréal inc., while supplying the services of five volunteer-lawyers to act as coaches over the same period. In addition to Guillaume Lavoie, a business law partner, and Louis Charette, a litigation partner at Lavery, both long time volunteers at the Fondation, the following lawyers will lend a hand to the Fondation’s initiatives, which include supporting start-up businesses and awarding grants to new entrepreneurs: Nicolas Joubert, labour, employment and immigration law partner; Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, labour and employment law partner; and Judith Houle-Couture, business law associate.   11. Conference by Julie Cousineau and Emil Vidrascu on the New Code of Civil Procedure to in-house counsel

    On November 25, 2015, Julie Cousineau and Emil Vidrascu, litigation partners at Lavery, gave a conference on the New Code of civil procedure in Montreal and via video conferencing in Quebec. Organized by the Canadian Bar Association (ACCJE division), the conference entitled “Le Nouveau Code de procédure civile changera-t-il votre vie comme conseiller juridique d’entreprise?” (Will the new Code of civil procedure change your life as an in-house counsel?) provided an overview of the practical implications of the new Code of civil procedure on the management of litigation files by in-house counsel.

  12. Lavery winner of the RBC Challenge for Centraide!

    On November 25, 2015, Lavery’s team comprised of lawyers and staff members, participated in the RBC Challenge by climbing Place Ville Marie’s 1000 stairs to raise money for Centraide in two minutes 43 seconds, five seconds more than the record established last year by a team of Olympic athletes! The RBC Challenge was able to raise the impressive amount of $ 210 000 to fight against poverty and social exclusion in the city. Congratulations to all the runners and the Lavery team for taking on this challenge for Centraide!
