Marie Cossette and Chloé Fauchon speak at the 2017 AÉECQ Convention
On May 25, Marie Cossette, partner and head of the Business Integrity practice and the Quebec City Public and Administrative Law group, and Chloé Fauchon, an associate with the same group, spoke at the 2017 Convention of the Association des estimateurs et des économistes de la construction du Québec (AEÉCQ), which was held May 25-26 at the Loews Hôtel Vogue in Montreal. Entitled Bill 108: highlights of the new rules on public contracting and the powers of the Autorité des marchés publics, the presentation answered many questions about the newly created Autorité des marchés publics (AMP) introduced in Bill 108, in particular the amendments tabled by the Minister subjecting municipalities to the AMP. Guillaume Lavoie participates in a McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA panel on governance
On June 13, Guillaume Lavoie, partner and head of the Lavery CAPITAL and Mergers and Acquisitions groups, will participate in a panel on governance organized by McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA being held at the HEC Montréal. Entitled Les défis et enjeux de la gouvernance, the panel will address the various issues and challenges faced by different industries and types of organizations to stimulate a discussion on governance based on concrete examples experienced by the panelists. The panel will also include Louise St-Pierre, former CEO of Cogeco Connexion, Josée Duplessis, Chief of Staff for the Federal Minister of Family, Children and Social Development and Ginette Mailhot, founder of Capital Humain Plus and a director of Anges Québec. Pierre Marc Johnson, recipient of the Médaille du Barreau du Québec
This year the Barreau du Québec will award its highest honour, the Médaille du Barreau to Pierre Marc Johnson, Counsel at Lavery and former Premier of Quebec. This greatly deserved honour recognizes his career as a jurist and a politician and more particularly his contribution to the advancement of law and the public interest. Acting as chief negotiator for Quebec since 2009 during the negotiations of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Me Johnson was responsible for relations and representations with Canadian and European Union representatives, on behalf of a dozen Quebec government ministries. The negotiations culminated on February 15th of this year when the European Parliament approved the CETA. The signing of this agreement is an unprecedented event for Quebec as it is the first time in its history that the province has fully participated in the negotiation of an international trade agreement. "The immense pleasure and great pride we felt upon learning the news is equal to the privilege we enjoy of being able to count on a lawyer of Pierre Marc Johnson’s calibre among our ranks", stated Anik Trudel, Chief Executive Officer. Me Johnson will receive his award on June 15th at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, during the opening dinner of the Journées du Barreau du Québec. Daniel Bouchard speaks about the new Environment Quality Act
Daniel Bouchard, Managing Partner of the Quebec City office, spoke at a meeting of the Réseaux Experts/Développement durable organized by the Manufacturers and Exporters of Quebec (MEQ), held on April 21 at the Agropur head office in St-Hubert. He pointed out to MEQ members the repercussions for Quebec businesses of Bill 102, An Act to amend the Environment Quality Act to modernize the environmental authorization scheme and to amend other legislative provisions, in particular to reform the governance of the Green Fund.

André Vautour elected to the board of directors of the Fondation de l’Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec
On April 27, André Vautour, a partner of the Business Law group, was elected to the board of directors of the Fondation de l'Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec. The Fondation’s mission is to promote the interests and advancement of nursing for the benefit of patients. It encourages recognition of the instrumental role played by the nursing profession in Quebec’s healthcare system.

Nicolas Joubert speaks at the Éditions Yvon Blais Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail
Nicolas Joubert, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at the Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail (Occupational Health and Safety Colloquium) organized by Éditions Yvon Blais and held on May 11 in Québec City. Entitled La surveillance et la filature des travailleurs absents à la suite d’un accident de travail : les bonnes pratiques et les pièges à éviter, the presentation addressed the legal framework surrounding these sensitive issues. Me Joubert also reviewed recent jurisprudence and highlighted best practices and pitfalls to avoid. A second edition of the colloquium will be held in Montréal this coming December 7. Benjamin Poirier pens an article in Cheval Québec Magazine
Benjamin Poirier, a lawyer with the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group, penned an article entitled L’inspection vétérinaire préachat :l’amour n’est plus aveugle in the Spring 2017 edition of Cheval Québec Magazine. With a view to improving practices for the benefit of members of the equestrian community, Mr. Poirier discusses the importance of a pre-purchase veterinary examination during a purchase-sale transaction and its legal implications. Simon Rainville appointed to the Disciplinary Committee of the Barreau du Québec
On May 4, Simon Rainville, an associate of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution group, was appointed to the Disciplinary Committee of the Barreau du Québec. As a member of the Committee, Me. Rainville will actively participate in hearing complaints filed against lawyers who breach the law or the regulations of the Barreau. He will also rule on and impose sanctions for any such breaches.

Léonie Gagné and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin presented a conference intitled “Practical advice to claim adjusters : from the loss to the trial”
On May 11, Léonie Gagné and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin, respectively an associate and a partner from our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group presented a seminar to claim adjusters from Cuierrier & Associés and select clients at the Le Mirage Golf Club in Terrebonne. Entitled “Practical advice to claim adjusters: from the loss to the trial”, the seminar provided claim adjusters with advice to assist them when investigating and recovering indemnities paid by the insurer as well as with the insured’s defense. The conference covered among other subjects the drafting a reservation of rights letter, notices that can be sent by claim adjusters, a review of the new Code of Civil Procedure, and an overview of related decisions.

Benjamin Gross panelist at the ELFA Legal Forum
On May 7, Benjamin Gross, a partner of the Business Law group and the co-chair of the Infrastructure Law group, participated as a panelist during the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) Legal Forum held May 7 to 9 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Entitled Canada and Mexico – What You Need to Know, Mr. Gross highlighted similarities in United States, Canada and Québec laws and demonstrated how typical transactions elsewhere can be structured simply in Québec, while reviewing recent case law that had an impact on Canadian transactions.

Valérie Belle-Isle speaks at the Strategic Day on Administrative Law
Valérie Belle-Isle, an associate of the Public and Administrative Law group, spoke at the Strategic Day on Administrative Law, held on April 26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Montréal. Entitled Les 5 incontournables de la Cour suprême du Canada en droit administratif, Ms. Belle-Isle reviewed the top 5 administrative law decisions rendered last year by the Supreme Court, and highlighted the approaches adopted by the different Supreme Court judges with respect to the judicial review of decisions by administrative tribunals.
