  1. Olga Farman Named a Rising Star in Canada

    Montreal, November 26, 2010 – Lavery is pleased to announce that Ms. Olga Farman was honoured as a Rising Star in Canadian legal circles at the Lexpert Rising Stars Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation held in Toronto on November 25. The purpose of this annual competition organized by the legal magazine Lexpert is to honour Canada’s most promising lawyers under the age of 40 for their professional accomplishments, leadership, vision, entrepreneurial skills, concern for client satisfaction and teamwork. Ms. Farman is a member of the firm's Business Law Group and specializes in Health and Life Sciences Law. She possesses a broad understanding of the organizational structure of health care institutions, research funding methods and the rules governing the legal and administrative activities of health care institutions. She specializes in the preparation and negotiation of technology transfer licensing agreements, research and development, distribution and basic and clinical research contracts and intellectual property rights agreements. Ms. Farman works with major health sector clients and counsels the MSSS and others on the evolution of the rules governing research agreements in Quebec and Canada. She also advises biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on all aspects of their operations and product development phases.   3. Raphaël Schachter, Speaker at the Quebec/Jewish Law Symposium

    Mr. Raphaël Schachter, Q.C., was invited to speak at the Quebec/Jewish Law Symposium held at the Chabad of Westmount. The Quebec Bar recognized this activity as part of the Continuing Education program. The topic of Mr. Schachter’s conference was, “How Does a Criminal Lawyer Defend a Client that He Knows is Guilty.”The evening was chaired by the former Minister of Justice of Quebec, the Honourable Justice Herbert Marx, of our Superior Court. Other participants included Justice William Fraiberg, Mr. Harvey Yarosky and Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe, Harvard law professor. Approximately one hundred people, mainly judges and lawyers, attended the symposium.

  4. Catherine Rioux speaks of the terms and conditions of loyalty cards

    On November 12, Catherine Rioux, Business Law Group member at Lavery, published an article on the terms and conditions of loyalty cards called “The Legal Framework with Respect to Reward Programs” available in Legal Matters, the online legal page of The Gazette. Ms. Rioux’s article makes reference to a recent class action filed by loyalty card holders.

    Ian Rose, partner at Lavery, was a speaker at the 2nd seminar on “La responsabilité des administrateurs et membres de la direction,” at the Federated Press Conference in Montreal on November 4th and 5th. Mr. Rose conference more specifically pertained to secondary market class action recourses in Canada called “Marché secondaire : Recours en responsabilité civile statutaire et recours collectifs.”

  7. Michel Yergeau and Jean Saint-Onge, Members of the Board of Fondation Lafontaine-Cormier

    Michel Yergeau, Ad. E., was appointed Chair of the Fondation Lafontaine-Cormier on October 26th. Spearheaded by Quebec Court of Appeal’s J. J. Michel Robert, the Fondation Lafontaine-Cormier will work to promote Quebec’s judicial heritage through educational activities and conservation of documents and objects or buildings of historical importance related to justice. Also members of the Board of Directors are Mr. Richard W. Pound, Ad. E., Mr. Jean Saint-Onge, Ad. E., the Honourable Pierrette Rayle, Senator Serge Joyal, Mr. Babak Barin, Ms. Sylvie Champagne and leader of the bar, Mr. Michel Doyon.

  8. Jean Saint-Onge Organizes and Hosts a Conference on Class Actions

    The field of class actions is flourishing and the related case-law is in constant evolution. On October 28th and 29th, Jean Saint-Onge, partner at Lavery, hosted a conference on class actions called “Recours collectifs : Développement récents au Québec, au Canada et aux États-Unis” as a continuing education seminar of the Quebec Bar. This conference was held at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal and welcomed no less than 34 speakers specializing in class actions from various jurisdictions in North America. Jean-Philippe Lincourt, lawyer at Lavery specializing in class actions, actively participated in the organization of this seminar.

  9. The Université de Montréal Honours Ms. Élise Poisson

    Montreal, November 1, 2010 - Lavery is proud to announce that Ms. Élise Poisson, Managing Partner, has been honoured by the Association des diplômés de l’Université de Montréal at the closing dinner of the Mois des diplômés, which was held on October 29th at the Centre des sciences de Montréal.   12. Dina Raphaël and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin hold a training seminar on the insurance contract formation and technological documents

    Dina Raphaël and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin held a training seminar called “Insurance Contract Formation and Technological Documents in the Web Era” on October 19th and 20th for insurance adjusters and brokers. This training was on the insurance contract formation and technological documents. During the seminar, the speakers discussed the online formation of insurance contracts and the principles governing the proposal and issuance of an insurance contract in connection with new technologies. The purpose of this presentation was also to explain the regulations governing document management in an insurance context, both in terms of use and conservation of technological documents and to describe their eligibility as evidence.
