Lavery rides for the fight against prostate cancer
On June 18, a Lavery team participated in the 8th edition of the Tour du Courage PROCURE to raise funds to fight prostate cancer through research, awareness, information, and support for men afflicted by this disease and their families. The Lavery team biked up Mount Royal 12 times in 2 h 36 and raised $5,250, in recognition of the 12 men diagnosed with prostate cancer every day in Quebec.

Lavery’s Montréal 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law an unqualified success
Lavery’s 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law held in Montréal was an unqualified success. About 500 people attended the event held June 7 at the Centre Mont-Royal to learn about recent developments in this area. The symposium was hosted by Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, partners of the Labour and Employment Law group. Participants also attended a number of workshops facilitated by Dave Bouchard, Élodie Brunet, Nicolas Courcy, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, Carl Lessard, Josiane L’Heureux, Zeïneb Mellouli and Véronique Morin. The speakers addressed a variety of subjects, including best practices when hiring and terminating employment, managing employees with difficult behaviour or in psychological distress, telework and renegotiating a collective agreement.

Nicolas Joubert speaks at the Éditions Yvon Blais Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail
Nicolas Joubert, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at the Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail (Occupational Health and Safety Colloquium) organized by Éditions Yvon Blais and held on May 11 in Québec City. Entitled La surveillance et la filature des travailleurs absents à la suite d’un accident de travail : les bonnes pratiques et les pièges à éviter, the presentation addressed the legal framework surrounding these sensitive issues. Me Joubert also reviewed recent jurisprudence and highlighted best practices and pitfalls to avoid. A second edition of the colloquium will be held in Montréal this coming December 7. Lavery on the Podium at the Saint-Lambert Triathlon/Duathlon
--> About 20 representatives of the firm took part to various disciplines during the 29th edition of the Saint-Lambert Triathlon/Duathlon, on July 16, 2016. This prestigious event, which gathered over 700 athletes, is co-organized by Sport Aktiv and the St-Lambert ORANGE Triathlon Club, which Nicolas Joubert, a Lavery partner, co-founded. Lavery has been a partner of this provincial competition for over a decade. For another year, the firm has held its own. The remarkable performance of Lavery’s team needs to be highlighted: Nicolas Joubert, gold medallist in the Triathlon Men 35–39 category, Isabelle Richard, medallist in the Duathlon Women 20–29 category, as well as the Lavery men teams, who won the silver and bronze medals. 2016 edition of Lavery’s Major Symposium in Labour and Employment Law - A critical look at some of the challenges facing the business community
Lavery held the 2016 edition of its Major Symposium in Labour and Employment Law and it was a great success. About 300 people made their way to Centre Mont-Royal on June 8, 2016, to participate in the event. The plenary session was hosted by Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, partners in the Lavery’s Labour and Employment Law group. On this occasion, attendees got to participate in various workshops presented by Dave Bouchard, Jean Boulet, Élodie Brunet, Brittany Carson, Norman A. Dionne, Josée Dumoulin, Carl Lessard, Josiane L’Heureux, Zeïneb Mellouli, Véronique Morin and François Parent. Speakers addressed many different subjects, such as best practices in recruiting, in employment termination and in disability management; in psychological harassment, in pension plans and lessons we can learn about labour and employment law after forty years of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Lavery proud to pursue its tradition of contribution to the development of entrepreneurship by supporting Fondation Montréal inc.
Lavery, through its Lavery GO inc. Program and Lavery Capital group makes an aggregate $25,000 donation ($5,000 annually over five years) to Fondation Montréal inc., while supplying the services of five volunteer-lawyers to act as coaches over the same period. In addition to Guillaume Lavoie, a business law partner, and Louis Charette, a litigation partner at Lavery, both long time volunteers at the Fondation, the following lawyers will lend a hand to the Fondation’s initiatives, which include supporting start-up businesses and awarding grants to new entrepreneurs: Nicolas Joubert, labour, employment and immigration law partner; Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, labour and employment law partner; and Judith Houle-Couture, business law associate. Lavery holds a symposium in Labour and Employment Law in Quebec City
Lavery’s Quebec City office organized a symposium in Labour and Employment Law on September 30, 2015. Gathered at Hôtel Quartier, about 30 attendees got to participate in various workshops presented by Marie-Hélène Riverin, Charlotte Fortin, Jean-François Pagé and Nicolas Joubert. Speakers addressed many different subjects, starting with a retrospective of decisions of interest in that field, as well as presentations regarding a variety of problems that can arise in the workplace.

Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, speakers at the CACE 12th Annual Conference
The Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers (CACE) held its 12thannual conference from September 10 to September 12, 2015 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Two Labour Law partners at Lavery, Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, were speakers at this event Mr. Joubert presented a conference entitled “Mitigation of damages in the context of wrongful dismissals - Recent developments across Canada”. He covered several aspects of mitigation in the context of wrongful dismissal, namely self-employment as a fulfillment of an employee’s duty to mitigate, and the employer’s burden of proof in establishing the employee’s failure to mitigate. As for Mr. Lavoie, he took part in a panel answering 11 ethics questions in labour law.

Four Lavery lawyers speak at Effects Mtl 2015
On June 10, 2015, at the Mont-Royal Centre, took place Effects Mtl 2015, an international business convention which aims to showcase the province of Quebec and support the VFX and animation sector. Nicolas Joubert, Nadine Landry, Catherine Maheu and Norman A. Dionne, partners at Lavery, gave a conference to over 100 participants entitled “Pitfalls to avoid in recruitment of foreign talent”, which discussed the best practices to avoid bad surprises, delays and reduce costs, as well as the important distinctions between contracts of employment and contracts for services, and the most efficient means to protect intellectual property.
