  1. Lavery Sherbrooke Office and the 11th Annual Conference on Insurance

    On October 22nd, Lavery Sherbrooke Office held the 11th Annual Conference on Insurance entitled: « Récents développements en assurance de dommages ». The conference was organized in cooperation with Déry, Barrette, expert consultants in claim settlements.  Sylvain Provencher and Cheryl Gilbert, both specialised in Insurance Law and litigation at the Lavery Sherbrooke Office, delivered presentations entitled: « Résumé des décisions importantes dans la dernière année en assurance de dommages » and « Comment traiter une réclamation avec un assuré difficile ? Les limites de l’obligation de collaboration de l’assuré ». Two other conferences were also presented: « Le rôle d’un expert en sinistres en situation de catastrophe-Lac-Mégantic » and « Comment maximiser vos chances d’établir un bon contact avec l’assuré – analyse des types de personnalité et comportement à éviter ». This event was a true success, much appreciated by the 130 participants.

  2. Guy Lavoie of Lavery - Speaker at the ACUQ Conference

    On October 30, 2014, Mr. Guy Lavoie, a partner in Lavery’s Labour and Employment team, spoke at this year’s Association des centres d’urgence du Québec (ACUQ) Conference in Quebec City. His presentation was entitled Joies, périls et futur de l’internet et des réseaux sociaux dans le milieu de travail (The Joys, Perils and Future of Internet and Social Media in the Workplace). Since the advent of the Internet in the workplace at the beginning of the 90’s, employers have faced ever-changing challenges. With the arrival of social media and the popularity of smartphones, things got even more complicated. Where does this leave us in 2014? What are the challenges, the rights and the obligations of employers and employees in a digital workplace? What are the best practices under the circumstances? How can freedom of speech for employees coexist with an employer’s right to preserve its reputation? What are the effects of social media on labour relations? Those are some of the issues Mr. Lavoie addressed during his presentation.

  3. Lavery’s GO inc. Program Launch – Blast off!

    A hundred enthusiastic young entrepreneurs and representatives of start-up support organizations for Lavery’s Go inc. Program launch on November 12th. Don McCarty, Managing Partner at Lavery, and Mr. Étienne Brassard, Go inc. Program Coordinator and associate in the Private Financing group at Lavery outlined the program’s advantages while two entrepreneurs also spoke about the value and importance of obtaining appropriate guidance throughout the start-up process.     On November 5th, 2014, Julie Cousineau, Jean-Philippe Lincourt and Laurence Bich-Carrière of Lavery discussed the reform of the Quebec Code of Civil Procedure.   5. Appointment of André Laurin of Lavery by the CPA Board of directors

    Lavery is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. André Laurin as Chairman of the ad hoc advisory committee on the limitation of professional liability of the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec (CPA Order).   6. Lavery Financial Products and Services Distribution Group 2014 Private Discussion: A Great Success!

    The 2014 edition of Lavery’s Private Meetings organized by the firm’s Distribution of financial products and services Practice Group was a real success. On October 15th, more than 70 financial institution managers gathered at Lavery’s Conference Centre to participate in the conference which was entitled: “The Cooperative Capital Market Regulatory System: beyond the political debate”. Lavery had invited several renowned speakers: Mr. Raymond Doray, Administrative law partner at Lavery, Mr. Jean Martel, Business law partner at Lavery, Pr. Stephane Rousseau, professor at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Law where he holds the Chair in Governance and Business Law, Mr. Doug Hyndman, Chair and CEO, Canadian Securities Transition Office to CCRMS and Mr. Miville Tremblay, Senior Regional Representative & Director (Financial Markets), Bank of Canada.   9. Lavery launches GO inc. program - Legal services tailored to the needs of start-up businesses

    Lavery is pleased to announce the creation of its GO inc. Program, whose mission is to provide affordable, quality legal services to qualifying start-up businesses. This personalized program offers a wide-range of legal services, often required in the start-up phase of businesses, namely incorporation, trademark and domain name registration, employment agreements, as well as workplace policies. The legal services will be provided at a fixed rate to accommodate the budget of young entrepreneurs. Each business selected for the GO inc.   10. The Lavery Quebec City office renews a pro bono partnership agreement with the YWCA

    As part of this agreement, Lavery will present five legal conferences or roundtable discussions on various topics of interest for the beneficiaries of the YWCA and will provide legal services to the association. This partnership agreement, which was negotiated by Ms. Marie-Hélène Riverin, associate at the Lavery Quebec City office, is part of the firm’s long-standing tradition of involvement in its community. Ms. Riverin is a volunteer trainer for the program Leader et décisionnelle of the YWCA Québec.

  11. Lavery acts for Keurig Canada Inc. in the sale of its Van Houtte Cafés-Bistros Franchise System to MTY

    Lavery is pleased to announce it acted as legal counsel to Keurig Canada Inc. (“Keurig Canada”), a subsidiary of the giant coffee roaster and distributor Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR), in the sale of its Van Houtte Cafés-Bistros Franchise System to MTY Food Group, Inc. (“MTY”) (TSX: MTY). Under the terms of the agreement, Keurig Canada will maintain ownership of the Van Houtte brand, while MTY will own all of the Franchise System related assets. This sale does not include any of the manufacturing and distribution operations of the Canadian roaster. Lavery’s transactional team was led by Mr. Jean-Philippe Turgeon (Franchise Law) and included Ms. Valérie Boucher (M&A), Ms. Stéphanie Destrempes (Franchise Law), Mr. Guillaume Synnott (Franchise Law and M&A) and Ms. Sonia Guerin (M&A).
