Two Lavery lawyers named members of the Board of Directors of the Young Bar Association of Montreal
Lavery congratulates Léa Maalouf and Myriam Brixi, lawyers in Lavery’s Litigation Group, for their election as members of the Young Bar Association of Montreal’s Board of Directors 2015-2016, during the annual general meeting which took place on May 29, 2015 at the Palais des congrès. This is Ms. Maalouf’s third term as administrator. For the second year in a row, the election was held electronically, and 782 members exercised their right to vote, making this board of directors the most representative to date. Lavery also wishes to highlight the excellent work of Ms. Zeïneb Mellouli, Labour and Employment Law associate at Lavery and administrator during the 2014-2015 term, for her involvement and accomplishments within the Young Bar Association this past year. On May 29, 2015, the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazinepublished the 2015 Lexpert/ROB Corporate Special Edition on Canada's Leading Corporate Lawyers, in which Michel Blouin and René Branchaud, partners at Lavery, are recognized as leading lawyers in Canada in the area of business law. Mr. Pierre Marc Johnson reacts to the passing of Mr. Jacques Parizeau
Currently travelling in Europe, Mr. Pierre Marc Johnson, former Premier of Quebec, learned of former Premier of Quebec and leader of the Parti Québécois, Mr. Jacques Parizeau’s passing. He wishes to publish the following release: « Upon learning of the death of Mr. Jacques Parizeau, former Premier of Quebec, my heart first goes out to his children, his family and his wife. I offer them my deepest condolences. Mr. Parizeau marked the province of Quebec in a significant way, through both his beliefs and his work. Governmental advisor and brilliant bureaucrat, he was — with a few others of his generation — one of the architects in projects aiming to turn Quebec into an interventionist and efficient state. In elective office and asMinister of Finance, as well as President of the Treasury Board, he often adapted his vision of the state to ever-changing circumstances relating to budget constraints and the free market. His uncompromised beliefs as a separatist made him the leader of those in the Parti Québécois who shared a more radical vision of Québec’s future. Adamant but always courteous, peremptory but open to debate, he managed to devote most of his life as a public figure to his beliefs, which he did to the very end. Once again, my deepest sympathies to his family and all those he loved dearly. »

Nicolas Gagnon, Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers
Lavery is proud to announce that Nicolas Gagnon, a partner in Lavery’s Construction and Surety Law team, became a Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers (CCCL), an organization comprised of close to 80 lawyers from across Canada, during the 18th Annual Meeting and Conference held in Washington, D.C., from May 28 to May 31, 2015. The CCCL is an independent, non-profit organization, who aims to facilitate and encourage the association of outstanding lawyers who are distinguished for their skill, experience and high standards of professional and ethical conduct in the practice or teaching of construction law and who are dedicated to excellence in the specialized practice of construction law. Fellowship in the College is by invitation only, initiated by nomination of other Fellows.

Jean Boulet of Lavery receives the Solange-Dupuis-Lamothe Award
Lavery is proud to announce that Mr. Jean Boulet, a Labour and Employment partner and manager of the Lavery Trois-Rivières office, received the Solange-Dupuis-Lamothe Award during Centraide Mauricie’s Annual General Meeting on May 27, 2015. Mr. Boulet is very active in the community. He is often called upon to manage business or philanthropic initiatives. Following his arrival at Centraide in 2009, he became chairman of the 2010 campaign and is presently president of the board of directors of Centraide Mauricie Mr. Boulet is involved in a variety of projects such as lac à l’épaule, social delegates committee, Assemblée des Centraide du Québec representative, press conferences, campaign launches and more. He also animated the first philanthropic diner organized by Centraide Mauricie, which Mr. Andrew Molson attended. The Solange Dupuis-Lamothe Award is given annually to an individual who made a difference through his volunteer work with Centraide, on various levels.

Two Lavery partners sign Maccabi Haifa on behalf of IBMG L.P.
Benjamin David Gross and Sébastien Vézina, partners at Lavery, counseled IBMG L.P. (International Basketball Marketing Group) for the signature of a promotions and services agreement with Maccabi Haifa (2014 finalist in the Israel Basketball Super League). Maccabi Haifa will play two much anticipated basketball games on American soil, one against the Memphis Grizzlies at Fedex Forum in Memphis on Thursday October 8th, 2015 , and one against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday October 11th, 2015.

Lavery’s Pierre Marc Johnson, panelist at an international conference
On May 28th 2015 at Université Laval, Mr. Pierre Marc Johnson, of Counsel at Lavery and Québec’s Chief Negotiator for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union, spoke on a distinguished panel whose members were invited to examine the relationship between the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions and international trade agreements. The International Conference, which was organized by the Faculty of Law of Université Laval, the Fernand-Dumont Chair on Culture at INRS and the Coalition for Cultural Diversity, was attended by over a hundred participants from around the world. The importance of this anniversary and of the role played by MLAs, researchers and artists from Quebec in the inception and implementation of this agreement was highlighted at an evening reception held at the Legislative Assembly.

Simon Gagné takes part in an expert roundtable at AEPC’s Annual General Meeting
On May 28, 2015, Simon Gagné, a partner practicing health law and labour law at Lavery, took part in an expert roundtable before almost 50 participants during the Annual General Meeting of the Association des établissements privés conventionnés (AEPC). Entitled « Le rôle de la direction générale en marge d’une plainte logée auprès du Commissaire local aux plaintes et à la qualité des services » (The general management’s role when a complaint is filed to the Local Service Quality and Complaints Commissioner), this conference discussed the general management’s role upstream and downstream of a complaint, the various immunities and protections found in the Act respecting Health Services and Social Services, as well as access to a user’s complaint record.

Louis Rochette takes part in Leucan’s Shaved Head Challenge in Quebec City
On May 24, 2015, Louis Rochette, a Business Law and Life Sciences partner at Lavery, co-chaired the 15th edition of the Leucan Shaved Head Challenge in Quebec City with Mr. Germain Lamonde, president of Exfo. On this occasion, Mr. Rochette took on this challenge and had his head shaved as a show of solidarity towards the children who, following chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, have lost their hair, which allowed him to collect over $22,000. With more than 580 participants in Quebec City, this event was deemed a great success, with a gathered total amount of $465,000 in donations. Evelyne Verrier, co-lecturer of the CLHIA
On May 7, 2015, Evelyne Verrier, a Litigation partner at Lavery, was co-lecturer at the 2015 Claims Section Annual Conference of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) held at Niagara Falls from May 6 to May 8, 2015. This conference discussed various subjects of interest relating to the life and health insurance industry, such as a review of recent case law.

Evelyne Verrier takes part in a conference on legal file processes
On April 23, 2015, Evelyne Verrier, a Litigation partner at Lavery, presented a conference entitled «Les divers recours judiciaires: comment vous y retrouver et comme vous y préparer!» (The various legal proceedings: how to find your way through it and be prepared!) during a private event organized by a group of insurers and claims adjusters in damage insurance. This conference discussed the process of legal cases, the new Code of Civil Procedure, and how to properly prepare files and testimonies presented in contentious cases.
