  1. The Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition: three prizes for a team supervised by Lavery

    On February 17th and 18th, 2017, the 39th edition of the Pierre-Basile-Mignault pleading competition was held between students from six civil law faculties in Canada. Lavery has been involved in this competition for several years. This year, students from two teams were supervised by four lawyers from the Litigation group: Laurence Bich-Carrière and Maude Lafortune-Bélair for the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Justin Gravel and Audrey-Julie Dallaire for the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) UQAM’s appellant team won the Yvon Blais Cup, which is awarded to the finalist team. Two members of the UQAM team were awarded prizes for best speaker: Laurence Landry-Plouffe received the Canadian Bar Association Cup, Quebec Division (2nd best) and Mélissa Desgroseillers was the recipient of the Lavery Cup (3rd best).   2. Zeïneb Mellouli appointed to the CNESST pay equity and labour standards advisory committee

    Zeïneb Mellouli, a lawyer with the Labour and Employment Law group, was appointed to the pay equity and labour standards advisory committee during a December 15, 2016, meeting of the board of directors of the Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST). The committee’s role is to advise the CNESST Board of Directors and the minister responsible for labour. Click here for more information on the CNESST.

  3. Richard Burgos and Louis-Martin Dubé present the 2016 Annual Review of jurisprudence in real estate law

    Richard Burgos and Louis-Martin Dubé, partners with the Business Law group, presented the 2016 Annual Review of jurisprudence in real estate law held on February 22, 2017. Over 100 people attended this luncheon seminar organized by the Canadian Bar Association, Quebec Branch, where they listened to the two partners discuss key elements of jurisprudence in real estate law from 2016.

  4. Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin and Bernard Larocque present a review of 2016 insurance law jurisprudence at the ChAD and at the CICMA

    Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin et Bernard Larocque, partners of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group, presented the 2016 review of insurance law jurisprudence at the Chambre de l’assurance de dommages (ChAD) on February 21 and at the Canadian Insurance Claims Manager Association (CICMA)on February 23. These two events, which brought together more than 60 attendees, highlighted the 2016 key decisions in the field of insurance law.

  5. Nicolas Gagnon speaks at ACRGTQ’s 73rd annual convention

    Nicolas Gagnon, a partner with the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group, spoke at the 73rd annual convention of the Association des constructeurs de routes et grands travaux du Québec (ACRGTQ) held on January 19th. The presentation, entitled Êtes-vous autant protégés que vous le croyez ?, analyzed the recent jurisprudence on the scope of the stipulation for another in construction industry contracts and reviewed the measures to implement to ensure various industry workers are legally protected.   6. Marie Cossette participates in the RJCCQ’s panel on La force du réseau en gouvernance

    Marie Cossette, a partner and head of the Corporate and Business Integrity group, participated in La force du réseau en gouvernance panel organized by the Regroupement des jeunes chambres de commerce (RJCCQ) held on February 20th. The purpose of the panel was to inform and interest young professionals in “Administrateurs de la Relève”, a training program on the roles and responsibilities of a director, offered in collaboration with the Collège des administrateurs de sociétés. Me Cossette shared her experience and views on subjects including parity on boards of directors (BD), the Act to amend the Act respecting the governance of state-owned enterprises to promote the presence of young people on the boards of directors of such enterprises and the benefits of getting involved in governance to build a network and become a person of influence.   7. Marie Cossette, Josiane L'Heureux and Philippe Tremblay speakers at the 20th annual convention of the CEGQ

    The 20th annual convention of the Corporation des entrepreneurs généraux du Québec (CEGQ) was held on February 15 to 17, 2017, at the Château Frontenac. Marie Cossette, Josiane L’Heureux and Philippe Tremblay were guest speakers at the convention. Marie Cossette, partner and Head of Lavery’s Business Integrity Group, spoke about key issues of the parties involved in the case of unilateral termination of a construction contract by the client. Josiane L’Heureux, partner of our Labor and Employment Law Group, presented the legislative components of criminal negligence and the principles applicable in the workplace. Philippe Tremblay, partner of our Litigation and Conflict Resolution Group, discussed on the subject of the obligations of the client to act transparently, fairly and in good faith when exercising a reservation clause allowing it to cancel a call for tenders.   8. Julie Cousineau Lecturer at the 2016 Annual Review of the Commercial Litigation Case Law of the ABC-Quebec

    On February 17, 2017, Julie Cousineau, a partner of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group, was the guest speaker at the 2016 Annual Review of Commercial Litigation Jurisprudence organized by the Canadian Bar Association, Quebec Branch (CBA-Quebec). This event gathered over 50 attendees, to hear speakers exchanged on last year’s case law and various subjects of commercial litigation.

  9. Étienne Brassard and Édith Jacques speak at the Colloque Export Mauricie Rive-Sud

    On February 3, Étienne Brassard and Édith Jacques, partners of our Business Law Group, were invited speakers at the Colloque Export Mauricie Rive-Sud held in Trois-Rivières. Myriam Lavallée, a lawyer of our Labor and Employment Law Group, initiated this partnership between Lavery and the Colloque, which gathered over 150 attendees to hear Mr. Brassard's and Ms Jacques’ presentations covering the legal aspects pertaining to export and risk management as well international trade, respectively.
