  1. Jean Martel member of the IIAC Hall of Fame Selection Committee

    On June 27, the Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC) announced the names of the 2017 Hall of Fame inductees: Catherine (Kiki) Delaney – Founder and President, Delaney Capital Management Ltd. Ned Goodman – Co-founder, Beutel, Goodman & Company; Founder, Dundee Corporation Stephen Jarislowsky – Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Jarislowsky, Fraser Limited William (Bill) Wilder – Former President, Wood Gundy Inc. John Pearce Bunting – Former President and CEO, Toronto Stock Exchange (posthumous) Peter Cundill – Founder, Peter Cundill & Associates Ltd.; Founder, Cundill Value Fund (posthumous) Jean Martel, a partner of the Business Law group, served on the IIAC Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The committee is composed exclusively of distinguished Canadian who have made their mark in various communities, from investments to politics, including the business, legal and academic communities. The 2017 Hall of Fame inductees will be enshrined at a Gala Dinner on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the Delta Toronto Hotel.

  2. Guy Lavoie elected Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers

    Guy Lavoie, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, was elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers during a meeting held on June 10 by the governors of this prestigious association. He will be officially inducted on November 11, 2017, in Washington. This distinction is awarded to Labour lawyers who distinguish themselves through their sustained contributions and performances in this area of practice and meet the highest standards of integrity, professional and excellence.

  3. Valérie Belle-Isle and Pier-Olivier Fradette speak at the ADMQ convention

    Valérie Belle-Isle and Pier-Olivier Fradette, lawyers of the Public and Administrative Law group, presented seminars during the Association des directeurs municipaux du Québec (ADMQ) annual convention, held June 14 – 16, 2017 at the Québec City Convention Centre. Me. Fradette spoke on June 15 about the work that a municipality could perform internally. The purpose of the seminar was to analyze the main construction laws and identify situations where a municipality could carry out the work using its own employees without having to hire professionals such as engineers, architects, electricians, plumbers, contractors with an RBQ permit or employees with a CCQ competency certificate. Both Me. Belle-Isle and Me. Fradette spoke during the second seminar, entitled Les zones grises des pouvoirs du conseil municipal (Grey areas in municipal council powers) presented on June 16, which identified situations where the municipal council has been granted broad powers under the Act and offered guidelines to general directors on assisting municipal councils in their decision-making. The three situations discussed were emergency work in the event of superior force, powers of the municipal council during the 30-day period preceding an election and requests to amend by-laws.

  4. Audrey Gibeault and Luc Pariseau present to the M&A Club

    Audrey Gibeault and Luc Pariseau, respectively an associate and a partner of the Business Law group, presented a seminar to the M&A Club on Nouveautés fiscales en matière d’achat/vente d’entreprise (The latest developments in taxation when buying or selling a business) on June 13. The seminar washeldatthe Lavery Conference Centre and was attended by over fifty people.

  5. Étienne Brassard and Guillaume Synnott mentors at the Parcours Entrepreneurial Rémi-Marcoux

    Once again this year, Étienne Brassard and Guillaume Synnott, respectively a partner and a lawyer of the Business Law group, delivered two workshops on May 16 and June 19 to students participating in the Parcours Entrepreneurial Remi-Marcoux of the HEC Montréal on governance, financing, corporate law, and other issues for young entrepreneurs. Students were also offered one-on-one consulting time to discuss their specific cases and establish a solid legal base for both their business model and the future of their company.

  6. Marie-Josée Hétu speaks at the 2017 RQSISQ Symposium

    On June 16, Marie-Josée Hétu, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at the 2017 Symposium of the Regroupement des directeurs des services d’incendies et de secours du Québec (RQSISQ), held at the Hotel Le Dauphin in Drummondville on June 15-16. Approximately twenty directors, officers, and managers working in various fire and rescue services across the province attended the conference, at which employee behaviour outside work, the duty of loyalty, and the use of social media were discussed.

  7. Jean-Philippe Turgeon appointed to the CQF Executive Board

    On May 26, Jean-Philippe Turgeon, a partner and head of the Franchising and Distribution group, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Conseil québécois de la franchise (CQF) as well as Vice President of Legal Affairs. As such, his role will be to promote and represent franchising in Quebec while ensuring the good governance of the organization. Mr. Turgeon will remain a member of the board of directors. Lavery’s Franchising and Distribution group provides local or international franchisors, buying groups, distributors, retailers and manufacturers with the legal services they need to improve their business model, optimize supply, grow their network, improve their product and services distribution, and strengthen their brand identity.

  8. An impressive participation by Lavery at the 30th edition of the St-Lambert Triathlon

    Nearly thirty representatives from Lavery participated in  the 30th edition of the St-Lambert triathlon that was held last Sunday, on July 9th. Welcoming nearly 800 athletes, the event was a great success once again this year.  Lavery not only enjoyed exceptional visibility but also the presence of several of its representatives on the podiums! The firm would like to congratulate the athletes who excelled and reminded everyone about the importance of teamwork. We would like to also note the great participation of many of our colleagues from our Quebec City and Sherbrooke offices. Congratulations to our athletes, notably: Jean-Benoît Thivierge (swimming), René Branchaud (cycling) and Pier-Luc Girard (running) who won first place above all the teams and the first place in the "Men’s Team" category. Zila Savary (swimming), François Nolet-Lévesque (cycling) and Judith Houle-Couture (running) ranked 3rd in the "Mixed Team" category. Nicolas Joubert won the silver medal in his M35-39 category. François Arseneault arrived in 1st place (Men) in the 10 km. Marie-Aude Thérien placed second (Women) in the 10 km.

  9. Lavery welcomes four new lawyers

          Lavery is pleased to welcome four new lawyers, Shan Jiang, Jean-Sébastien Massol, Gabrielle Tétrault and Ariane Villemaire. Ariane Villemaire and Jean-Sébastien Massol will join the Labour and Employment Law group. Gabrielle Tétrault will join the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group and Shan Jiang will join the Corporate Law group.  “Hiring these four new lawyers is a testament to the quality of their work as articling students. We are proud to be keeping the students we trained among our ranks,” said Anik Trudel, Chief Executive Officer.
