  1. Lavery Represents Industrial Alliance in a $200 Million Private Placement of Common Shares

    On September 15, 2011, Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. closed a private placement of 6,000,000 Common Shares for gross proceeds of approximately $200 million. The Common Shares were sold to Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. Industrial Alliance was represented by a team from Lavery consisting of Marc Rochefort, Michel Servant and Geneviève Fournier (corporate and securities), and Philip Nolan (tax). Founded in 1892, Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. is a life and health insurance company with operations in all regions of Canada as well as in the United States.

  2. Pierre Denis, Benjamin D. Gross and Étienne Brassard, Speakers at the Canadian Institute

    Pierre Denis, Benjamin D. Gross and Étienne Brassard gave presentations at a Canadian Institute advanced seminar on financing and security on January 25th and 26th at the Omni Hotel Mont-Royal in Montreal.The objective of this seminar was to help professionals deal with the latest developments in financing and security on property in order to better represent their clients and defend their financial interests. Participants benefited from the expertise of Mr. Denis and Mr. Brassard who spoke of financing and taking security on aircraft and the eventual coming into force in Canada of the Cape Town Convention and of Mr. Gross who spoke about intercreditor agreements.

  3. Lavery welcomes Carolyne Corbeil, Tax Lawyer

    Lavery is pleased to announce that Carolyne Corbeil is joining its Business Law Group’s Tax Law, and will be working out of the firm’s Montreal offices where she will practise tax planning.Before joining Lavery, Carolyne Corbeil developed her expertise serving as a director in tax for private companies in one of Canada’s largest professional services consulting firms in Canada.Ms. Corbeil received her LL.B. from the Université de Sherbrooke in 2005, and obtained her MBA from the same university in 2006. Ms. Corbeil has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 2007 and, in 2008, completed the Specialized Superior Tax Studies Diploma offered by HEC Montreal.

  7. Véronique Morin presents a workshop at the human resources seminar on knowledge management

    On December 1, Véronique Morin, lawyer at Lavery, was a lecturer for a workshop entitled “Transfert de connaissances en relations de travail et médias sociaux : l’apport d’un groupe de discussion” (The transfer of knowledge in work relationships and social media: the benefits of group discussions), which offered practical exercises in order to show participants the significance of such groups by basing it on social media.Lavery was a sponsor of this event organized by the Association québécoise d'établissements de santé et de services sociaux (AQESSS).

  8. Marc Beauchemin and André Vautour participate in a conference on regulatory conformity for the financial services

    On December 1, Marc Beauchemin and André Vautour participated in the Canadian Institute’s 2nd conference on regulatory compliance for financial services. Held at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, the conference was on the requirements of additional examinations by regulatory authorities.Mr. Beauchemin and Mr. Vautour’s presentation, called “Gérer les risques inhérents à l’impartition à toutes les étapes de la relation avec le fournisseur” (Managing risks from outsourcing in all the steps of a relationship with a supplier), discussed many factors that represent challenges when outsourcing as well as practical methods to use in an outsourcing agreement.

  9. Jean Saint-Onge, Chair of the Board of Fondation Marie-Vincent, appears in Cyberpresse

    Jean Saint-Onge, partner at Lavery and Chair of the Marie-Vincent Fondation, in the presence of other members of the Foundation, including Claude Mongeau, CN President and Chief Executive Office and honorary president of the 2011 fundraising campaign, last November to announce that this campaign helped raise 1,350,000 dollars to benefit children under 12 who are victims of abuse, notably sexual abuse. For the past 35 years, the Foundation has raised funds to support prevention, education, and aid initiatives for children and their families.   10. Lavery welcomes Carolina Manganelli, Aboriginal Law Lawyer

    Lavery is pleased to welcome Carolina Manganelli to the Administrative and Regulatory Law Group in the firm’s Montreal offices. Ms. Manganelli practises in the areas of aboriginal law, environmental law, energy and natural resources, mining law and government affairs.She has extensive expertise in aboriginal law, constitutional law and human rights, and previously worked for several years at the Department of Justice of Canada, in the Aboriginal Affairs Portfolio, most recently as Executive Assistant in the office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General. From 2000 to 2002, she participated in several international missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Ms. Manganelli has pleaded before several administrative tribunals as well as the Superior Court and Court of Appeal of Quebec. She has also represented clients before both the Quebec and Canadian Human Rights Commissions as well as the Police Ethics Commissioner.Ms. Manganelli holds an LL.M. in human rights law with an award of "Merit" from University College London, in London, United Kingdom, and received her LL.B. and B.C.L. degrees from McGill University in 2000. She also obtained a B.A. in sociology, with a minor in Canadian ethnic studies, with distinction, from McGill in 1996. Ms. Manganelli has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 2005.She speaks fluent English, French, Italian and Greek, as well as Spanish and Serbo-Croatian.

    On November 16 and 17, Dina Raphaël, partner at Lavery, and Nathalie Durocher, lawyer at Lavery, were speakers at the 4th edition of the “Conformité et gestion des risques pour les marchés financiers” conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Montreal. Ms. Raphaël and Ms. Durocher’s presentation was called “Changement de culture : ligne directrice proposée par l’Autorité des marchés financiers à l’égard des assureurs en matière de pratiques commerciales” (Change of Culture : Proposed Guidelines from the Autorité des marchés financiers for insurers in regards to commercial practices).
