    Ms. Valérie Boucher and Ms. Diana Darilus, lawyers in Lavery’s Business Law Group, acted as speakers on February 12, 2014 for the event La Relève presented by the Association de planification fiscale et financière (APFF).In their conference, entitled “Trusts and the 21-Year Rule: Impact and Measures” (À l’approche de la 21e année de la fiducie : impact et mesures à prendre »), Ms. Boucher and Ms. Darilus analyzed the tax and legal considerations that can be helpful in implementing a strategy aimed at reducing the tax impact following a trust’s 21-year anniversary.

  2. Lavery represents Héroux-Devtek Inc. in connection with the acquisition of British landing gear company APPH

    Lavery is pleased to announce that it acted as the legal advisor to Héroux-Devtek Inc. (hereinafter "Héroux-Devtek"), a leading Canadian manufacturer of aerospace products, in connection with its acquisition of the entire share capital of U.K.-based APPH Limited and U.S.-based APPH Wichita, Inc. (collectively "APPH"), subsidiaries of BBA Aviation plc (LES: BBA). APPH is an integrated supplier of landing gear and hydraulic systems and assemblies for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket applications.The transactional team at Lavery was led by Jean-Sébastien Desroches (mergers and acquisitions) and included Josianne Beaudry (securities) and Raphaël Bacal (mergers and acquisitions). Lavery's financing team was led by François Renaud (financing) and included Étienne Brassard (financing).In this transaction, Héroux-Devtek acquired four plants located in the United Kingdom and one plant in Wichita, Kansas. These plants have a combined workforce of approximately 400 employees, including a design engineering department staffed with 40 professionals. The purchase price, net of about US$4 million of cash acquired, is approximately US$124 million. The transaction was financed with Héroux-Devtek's available cash and existing credit facilities."Lavery is pleased to have been an active participant in this major international transaction in the aerospace sector.   4. Bernard Larocque and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin of Lavery, speakers at the 2013 Conference Jean-Bélanger on damage insurance

    Mr. Bernard Larocque and Mr. Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin, Litigation lawyers at Lavery, recently acted as speakers at the Canadian Bar Association, Québec Branch (CBA Québec) Annual Review of Insurance Law which drew many insurance professionals.This event was renamed Conference Jean-Bélanger in honour of a renowned lawyer at Lavery who passed away in 2013. Mr. Jean Bélanger is considered a pioneer in insurance law.   5. Louis Charette of Lavery appointed on the Defense Research Institute International Committee

    Mr. Louis Charette, a Litigation partner at Lavery, was appointed “Canada Country Chair” of the Defense Research Institute (DRI) International Committee. The DRI is the world’s largest organization of attorneys defending the interests of businesses and individuals in civil litigation cases.The DRI International Committee is a forum that brings together international clients and their in-house and outside counsel to discuss relevant substantive, regulatory and procedural issues.

  6. Chloé Fauchon joins Lavery as an associate

    Lavery is pleased to announce that Ms. Chloé Fauchon has joined the firm as an associate on January 20, 2014. Called to the Quebec Bar in 2014 and a former articling student with the firm in 2013, Ms. Fauchon will practise in the firm’s Administrative Law Group.Recipient of many awards for academic excellence, Ms. Fauchon took part in the prestigious pan-Canadian Laskin moot court competition in administrative and constitutional law for which her team won the first place Jeremy Oliver Prize. While at law school, she also did a legal internship with the department of legal affairs at the Quebec Ministry of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women as well as the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports.

  9. Lavery involved in Lexpert’s Top 10 Cases for 2013

    Lavery appears in Lexpert’s Top 10 Cases list for 2013 that was published in the magazine’s January 2014 issue. In Federation of Law Societies v. Canada (Attorney General), Mr. Raymond Doray, Ad. E., and Mr. Loïc Berdnikoff, Administrative Law partners at the firm, represented the Barreau du Québec and the Chambre des notaires before the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of British Columbia in a complex litigation pertaining to the constitutionality of specific provisions of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering)and Terrorist Financing Act that came into force on November 8, 2001.In this case, the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, supported by other petitioners, which include the Barreau du Québec and the Chambre des notaires du Québec, argued that lawyers should be exempted from provisions which, among other things, infringed on the attorney-client privilege, the duty of loyalty to each client and the independence of the Bar.   10. Bernard Larocque and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin of Lavery, speakers at the 2013 Annual Review of Insurance Law

    Mr. Bernard Larocque and Mr. Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin, Litigation partner and associate at Lavery, respectively, acted as speakers at a training seminar focused on the 2013 Annual Review of Insurance Law. This event took place at the Lavery Conference Centre on January 14-15, 2014.This event drew more than 80 insurance professionals. It is worth mentioning that the Annual Review of Insurance Law will from now on be organized in honour of Mr. Jean Bélanger. This renowned lawyer at Lavery, who passed away in 2013, is considered a pioneer in insurance law.   11. Denis Michaud appointed Vice-President of the Commission municipale du Québec

    Mr. Denis Michaud, who practised in the area of municipal law at Lavery, de Billy from 2006 to 2014, was appointed member and Vice-President of the Commission municipale du Québec on January 6, 2014.Mr. Michaud has more than 20 years of expertise in the municipal sector, including as a private practice lawyer and as City Manager and Clerk of the City of Beauharnois. He has taught municipal law and urban law at the Université Laval Faculty of Law as well as environmental law at the Centre universitaire de formation en environnement et développement durable of the Université de Sherbrooke.The appointment of Mr. Michaud is one of many for Lavery Alumni.   12. Emmanuel Sala, a lawyer specializing in Tax law, joins Lavery

    Lavery is pleased to announce that Mr. Emmanuel Sala has joined the firm as a Business Law partner.Mr. Sala’s practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations and financing transactions on behalf of Canadian and foreign corporations that are involved in various sectors, particularly renewable energy and natural resources.
