  1. Great Victory of UQAM at the Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition: Lavery leads Quebec's future litigators towards excellence

    On February 15 and 16, 2019, the 41st Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition was held between students from six Canadian civil law faculties. Once again this year, the UQAM team of law students (Dana Farès, Étienne C. Laplante, David Létourneau, Frédéric Comeau, Véronique Faucher-Lefebvre, and Gabriel Langelier), supervised by Myriam Brixi and Dominique Vallières, won five prizes, namely: The Bâtonnier du Québec Cup for best team; The Association des professeurs de droit du Québec Cup for best factum (respondent's factum); The SOQUIJ Cup for 2nd best factum (appellant's factum); The Yvon Blais Cup - tandem finalist (appellants - Frédéric Comeau and David Létourneau); The Canadian Bar Association Cup for 2nd best litigator (David Létourneau).   2. Sports law: Sébastien Vézina and Sonia Rasquinha negotiate a partnership with Top Rank on behalf of Groupe Yvon Michel

    A rematch between ex-champion Sergey Kovalev and Colombian-born Montrealer Eleider Alvarez will take place on February 2, 2019. This will be the first fight following a series of agreements entered into in December 2018 between Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) and Top Rank to co-promote WBO light heavyweight world titleholder Eleider “Storm” Alvarez. These multi-year co-promotional agreements will cover multiple fights. Our client, GYM, is one of the most respected organizations in Canada for organizing international boxing events and managing high-level boxers. Throughout its history, GYM has promoted champions who won world titles, including Joachim Alcine and Jean Pascal. Top Rank is a well-known boxing promotions company affiliated with the American sports television channel ESPN. Top Rank has promoted many world-class fighters, including Muhammad Ali and Oscar De La Hoya. Sébastien Vézina, a partner in the Business Law group, handled negotiations to reach the agreements, with the support of Sonia Rasquinha, a lawyer in the same group. Sébastien Vézina frequently provides businesses in the sports industry with advice on anything related to the business and legal aspects of their activities.

  3. Myriam Brixi appointed to the Barreau du Québec’s committee on access to justice

    Myriam Brixi, a lawyer with the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group, has been appointed to the Barreau du Québec’s committee on access to justice for a four-year term. The members of the committee are tasked with: -      Suggesting measures to improve access to justice in Quebec; -      Promoting dialogue on access to justice between the Barreau du Québec’s committees; -      Developing the Barreau du Québec’s general view on access to justice; -      Establishing a justice summit.

  4. Étienne Brassard one of Lexpert’s Rising Stars: leading lawyers under 40

Étienne Brassard’s practice is focused on private financing, mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate law.   6. Lavery welcomes four new professionals at its Montréal office

    Lavery is pleased to announce that four new professionals have joined its Montréal office. Marjolaine Arès joins the Business Law group as a partner. She has over 20 years of experience in commercial real estate law, and also specializes in lobbying law, mining and energy law, and telecommunications law. As a notary, Mrs. Arès undertakes the steps required for certifying and legalizing documentation in an effort to ensure their validity when intended for various foreign countries.   8. Parity certification: Lavery celebrates the commitment of new parity certified companies

  9. Lavery welcomes three new lawyers at its Quebec City office

    Lavery is pleased to announce that three new lawyers have joined its Québec City office.   Martin St-Amant (Barreau 1989, Corporate Law) completed his civil law degree at the University of Ottawa and holds a diploma from the Institute of Higher International Studies in Paris and a doctorate from the Université de Paris Sorbonne in international commercial law. He was part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiating team. His clients include corporations of all sizes that he advises on business immigration and on both national and international commercial law and intellectual property matters. Antoine Motulsky-Falardeau (Barreau 2003, Litigation Group) practises civil and commercial litigation and private international law. He advises and represents public and private corporations, shareholders, entrepreneurs and organizations in relation to their business and disputes in the areas of transportation, energy, franchising, construction, insurance, the garment trade, and the arts, in particular. He also teaches private international law at the Laval University Faculty of Law. Renalda Ponari (Barreau 2018, Litigation Group) joined the Lavery team in the winter of 2018. She completed her civil law degree at the University of Ottawa and the Barreau du Québec’s professional training program en 2017. Renalda was a constitutional law research assistant and worked for a law firm in the Gatineau region and for the Department of Justice Canada while she was a law student.
