  1. Me Nathalie Roy, Lawyer Emeritus and former executive director of Éducaloi, chooses Lavery

  2. Pierre Marc Johnson receives the Paul-André-Crépeau Medal from CBA-Quebec

    On November 28, the Quebec Branch of the Canadian Bar Association presented the prestigious Paul-André-Crépeau Medal for 2017 to Pierre Marc Johnson, counsel and chief negotiator for the Government of Quebec regarding the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), at their holiday season cocktail party. Acting as chief negotiator for Quebec, since 2009, in the negotiations of the proposed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union, Mr. Johnson has been responsible for relations with and making representations to the responsible authorities of the federal government (of Canada) and the European Union on behalf of a dozen departments of the Quebec government. Moreover, he will continue making his submissions to the national European governments in order to ensure the full ratification of CETA. Recently, in connection with the NAFTA negotiations, Mr. Johnson was appointed special counsel to the Quebec government for the trade agreements and a member of the NAFTA Advisory Council on the Environment by the Government of Canada. "Just like the Barreau du Quebec Medal he received last spring, this distinction rightfully highlights Mr. Johnson's contribution and work in advancing the international dimension of Canadian private and commercial law.   3. Justin Trudel speaks at a dinner seminar at the Cégep de Trois-Rivières

    On October 24, Justin Trudel, an associate of the Business Law group, spoke during a dinner seminar organized by the Social Sciences Department at the Cégep de Trois-Rivières. Each year, the Department organizes meetings between students and various professionals working in diverse settings in order to demystify certain myths about trades and answer questions. This is the second consecutive year that Mr. Trudel participated and shared with students his career path, the reality of practising law in a large law firm and the different general practice areas.

  4. Isabelle Duval Named YBM Lawyer of the Year in Family Law

    On November 23, Isabelle Duval, an associate in the firm's Family Law Group, was named as YBM lawyer of the year in the category of family law at the 11th edition of the YBM "Leaders of Tomorrow" Gala, held at the St-James Theater. "The naming of Isabelle Duval as YBM lawyer of the year for 2017 reflects the expertise and talent of the firm's next generation of lawyers", said Loïc Berdnikoff, Lavery's Director of Professional Development. "The firm is privileged to be able to count on exceptional professionals such as Isabelle. I would like to congratulate her, both on my own and on the firm's behalf, for this well-deserved distinction!"   5. Lavery donates $12,910 raised during the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie to Versant Sainte-Geneviève school in Québec City

    A Lavery team composed of firm members participated in the 1,000 km Grand défi Pierre Lavoie between June 15 and 18. The challenge was to cycle from the Saguenay to Montréal, by way of Mont-Tremblant and Gatineau, to raise money and to promote healthy lifestyles and the benefits of sports for youth and the not-so-young. Each team registered for the challenge had to sponsor an elementary school. Funds raised will be used to create or improve the facilities used by students for physical activity. An amount of $12,910 was officially donated to Versant Sainte-Geneviève on November 3. The school will use the funds to renovate a multi-functional room for physical activity.

  9. Felicia Yifan Jin participates in the 47th CIOFF World Congress

    Felicia Yifan Jan, articling student, participated as recording secretary during the 47th World Congress of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), held in Tenggarong, Indonesia from October 21 to 27, 2017. The CIOFF is a UNESCO advisory body whose purpose is to preserve, promote and spread traditional culture and folklore. Click here for more information about the CIOFF. Ms. Jan was mentored by Pierre Marc Johnson, counsel and chief negotiator for the Government of Québec in the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in the preparation of this event.

  10. Evelyne Verrier panelist at the 2017 Insurance and Investment Convention

    Evelyne Verrier, a partner and head of the Distribution of Financial Products and Services group, served as a panelist during the 2017 Insurance and Investment Convention organized by The Insurance & Investment Journal. The Convention was held on November 14 at the Palais des congrès in Montréal. Entitled Robots-conseillers et conseillers: ennemis jurés ou partenaires?, the purpose of the panel was to discuss the evolving role of advisors in an age when FinTech and accelerated technological developments are becoming increasingly prevalent in the insurance industry. Accompanied by Alex Veilleux, Co-Owner, Chief Innovation Officer and Product Strategist at VOOBAN and Michel Bergeron, a partner in EY, Ms. Verrier took the opportunity to share her view of the future for insurance advisors, the types of high value-added activities that advisors can use to distinguish themselves and the liability issues associated with various technological tools available to advisors.

  11. Lavery holds a seminar on the impact of recent amendments to the Environment Quality Act on the work of environmental consultants

    Lavery held a seminar on the impact and extent of recent amendments to the Environment Quality Act (EQA) on the work of consultants. The seminar was held on November 8 at the Lavery Conference Centre in Montréal. Environmental consultants listened to presentations by Daniel Bouchard and Chloé Fauchon, respectively a partner and a lawyer of the Public and Administrative law group, on amendments to the EQA that expanded the right to access authorization certificates granting the Minister the power to stop an activity without compensation and immunity from liability, except in cases of gross or intentional fault. They discussed these themes in light of the recent case law on the state’s liability in environment matters and offered practical suggestions to consultants on how to protect themselves given the changes.
