Jacques Nols has been heading the professional liability and health law sector of the firm's Litigation Group for over 30 years. Based in our Montreal offices, he devotes his practice exclusively to health law. Mr. Nols represents hospital centres, other health network organizations and institutions in various litigations.

 

Mr. Nols has appeared before the Superior Court, the Quebec Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada in health law matters. He has also been authorized to appear before Ontario courts in specific professional liability matters.

 

In addition to his personal practice, Mr. Nols supervises and directs the administrative and professional aspects of a competent and skilled team of health law litigators. He also relies on the services of lawyers practising in other specific sectors, such as access to information, labour relations, criminal and statutory law, environment, hospital administration, as well as the expertise of lawyers specializing in the drafting of factums for appeal courts.

 

Mr. Nols has been invited to lecture on various issues by organizations and institutions such as the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, the McGill Faculty of Law, The McGill Faculty of Dentistry, the Quebec Bar and The International Association of Invited Attorneys.

 

Mr. Nols is recognized in the 2012 directory The Best Lawyers in Canada in the fields of Legal Malpractice Law and Personal Injury Litigation. He is also listed in The Canadian Legal LEXPERT® Directory 2011 in the field of Medical Negligence.

 

Representative work

  • Mr. Nols played an important role in numerous cases before our Courts and advised many health network organizations and professionals. He advised a major hospital centre after it became aware that a HIV positive physician was performing surgery. He represented another hospital in a case that raised the issue of the right of a patient to refuse treatment even if so doing would cause his death in the short run.
  • He has also been involved in several cases pertaining to nosocomial infections and also in several cases pertaining to claims linked with babies born with significant health problems.
